Built-Up Felt Roofs Laid Layer by Layer

Felt is one of the most widely used coverings for flat roofs on extensions, garages and dormers. A modern felt roof is built up in layers, each one bonded to the last, so you get several barriers between the weather and the deck rather than a single skin.

The system normally starts with a base layer fixed to the deck, followed by a cap sheet with a mineral finish on top. The mineral surface protects the felt from sunlight and gives the roof a neat, even look. Edges, upstands and outlets are dressed carefully, as these are where water tries hardest to get in.

We lay felt roofs across Inverness, the Great Glen and Fort William. Before any work starts, you get a FREE, no-obligation quote setting out what the job involves, how many layers your roof will have and whether any decking needs replacing first.

  • Roof Area

The bigger the roof, the more felt and labour it takes to build up each layer across it.

  • Number of Layers

The build-up specified for your roof affects how much material is used and how long it takes to lay.

  • State of the Decking

Soft or rotten boards found under the old felt need replacing before the new layers go down.

  • Upstands & Outlets

Roofs that meet walls, windows or several outlets need more detailing, which adds time to the job.

How It Works

How a Felt Roof Is Laid

  1. Step 1

    Preparing the Deck

The old felt is stripped and the boards checked, with any soft sections replaced so the new layers bond to a clean, firm surface.

  2. Step 2

    Laying the Base Layer

A base layer is fixed or bonded across the whole deck, with the sheets lapped so water is shed over each joint rather than into it.

  3. Step 3

    Bonding the Cap Sheet

The mineral surfaced cap sheet is bonded over the base, with laps staggered from the layer below to keep the build-up watertight.

  4. Step 4

    Detailing & Handover

Upstands, edges and outlets are finished off, then we review the completed felt roof with you and confirm it is all as agreed.

FAQs

Felt Flat Roof Questions

Straight answers to the questions people ask most often about felt roofs in the Highlands. If yours is not here, call and ask.

How Is a Modern Felt Roof Different from Old Roofing Felt?

Older felt roofs were often a single thin layer. A modern felt roof is built up in bonded layers with a mineral cap sheet on top, which gives a much tougher covering.

Can New Felt Be Laid Over My Old Felt Roof?

In most cases we recommend stripping the old felt, so the deck can be checked and any rot dealt with. Laying over old felt can hide problems underneath.

What Is the Mineral Finish on a Felt Roof For?

The mineral surface on the cap sheet shields the felt from sunlight and weather, and gives the roof an even, finished appearance.

Is Felt a Good Choice for a Garage Roof?

Yes. Felt is a practical covering for garage roofs of most sizes and shapes, and it can be dressed neatly around edges and upstands.

Why Do the Edges of a Felt Roof Matter So Much?

Edges, upstands and outlets are where water is most likely to get in. Dressing the felt carefully at these points is what keeps the whole roof watertight.
